Congratulations to the Event Durham team who have been announced as a finalist in the Business Events Venue of the Year category at the 2024 North East England Tourism Awards.
On Thursday 29 February, our Event Durham team members were the proud recipients of the silver award for the Business Events Venue of the Year category at the 2024 North East England Tourism Awards, improving on their success of 2020 where they were awarded a bronze. Members of the Event Durham team and colleagues who support business tourism events activities from other areas of the University attended the awards ceremony that took place at Newcastle Civic Centre.
Helen Strangward, our Director of Accommodation & Commercial Services commented: “This is brilliant recognition for our very deserving Event Durham team and acknowledges the quality of their provision. I am particularly proud that we were the only university to be nominated for an award in the North East, illustrating the importance Durham places on working for and with its local community and wider region.”
The Awards celebrate quality, innovation and best practice in tourism throughout the region, highlighting the North East’s exciting visitor offering. A total of 14 categories will be awarded in a ceremony on Thursday 29 February 2024 at Newcastle Civic Centre, with winners continuing to represent the region at the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.
The Business Events Venue of the Year award acknowledges the huge importance of the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions sector of the tourism industry. Business tourism is immensely important to the North East and is a huge contributor to the regional economy, with thousands of delegates travelling here from all over the world to attend events every year.
Being shortlisted as a finalist recognises Event Durham’s service delivery, innovation in tourism and business excellence.

Event Durham’s service prowess has been recognised in previous years – the team has been honoured with North East England Tourism Awards at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, most recently receiving Bronze in the Business Events Venue of the Year category in 2020.
