On 19 October 2023, we were very pleased to welcome a delegation, hosted by Durham County Council, from the Japan Local Government Centre (JLGC) to Durham.
During the visit, we explored opportunities to strengthen further our research and education collaboration with Japanese institutions. The visit to Durham is a further example of how our partnership with Durham County Council promotes economic regeneration and development in the County.
Launched in 2021, the Durham Global Alliance (DGA) is one example of how we work in partnership together with other key stakeholders form across the City and County, including schools, Further Education institutions, business, arts and sporting organisations, to promote cultural understanding and provide international opportunities for young people.
Our long-standing partnerships with Japanese institutions underpin our 4-year multi-disciplinary Japanese Studies programme aimed at providing students with linguistic ability, cultural knowledge and disciplinary skills, including Japanese language, History, Art, Culture and Politics. This popular programme offers the opportunity to undertake a year abroad at one of our student exchange partners in Japan including Kyushu, Kyoto, Nagoya, Osaka and Tokyo universities.
Our Oriental Museum houses an extensive collection of Japanese artefacts and maintains a flagship partnership with the National Museum of Japanese History. We also collaborate on cultural activities with Teikyo University’s campus in Durham.
