MUSICON, Durham University’s professional concert series, is bringing high calibre music and eminent international performers to Durham for its 55th season.
Starting this October and running through to the end of April, the MUSICON series will offer a unique mix of classical, contemporary and traditional music which is open to everyone in Durham and the surrounding areas.
Rooted in the university’s world-leading Music Department, MUSICON draws on the special expertise and enthusiasms within the Department to create programmes which are diverse, inclusive and at the cutting-edge of musical research and knowledge.
This year’s programme ranges from intimate viol consorts and passionate Romantic chamber music, to reimaginations of medieval trobairitz repertoire (female troubadours) and transcendental modern piano music in Durham Cathedral.
The ever-popular East Asian strand returns with two fascinating fusions – one between Korean zither and bagpipes in November, plus a performance by EAPOS Trio in February, bridging three contrasting cultures and sound worlds.
Throughout the season MUSICON will be partnering with schools and colleges around Durham to offer workshops and open rehearsal opportunities with visiting artists for young people. MUSICON hopes to continue to grow these relationships over the coming years, ensuring the community can benefit from access to some of the world’s top professional musicians on our doorstep.
