Our monthly Community Newsletter explores the news, events, and research both at Durham University and in the city itself.
This month, we have some family-friendly events such as the annual Miners' Gala, the Durham Shakespeare Festival, the Durham City Run Festival, and the Durham Fringe Festival.
We've also included news that might interest our local community, including the announcements that we've been ranked 78th in the QS World University Rankings, Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson from our Department of Classics and Ancient History has received an MBE, and Reverend Canon Dr Philip Plyming has been appointed the Dean of Durham Cathedral. We recently celebrated the winners of this year's Durham University Volunteering and Outreach (DUVO) Awards and the DUVO team has also won an international award for volunteering. Finally, we've included information on Congregation and on Vice-Chancellor Professor Karen O'Brien's monthly Durham Advertiser column.
The newsletter's Spotlight section highlights the work our staff do that involves and benefits the local community. This month's Spotlight features our new Chancellor Dr Fiona Hill, which has given us the opportunity to introduce her to our community.
The research conducted at Durham University is world-leading, and we've highlighted a few stories that the local community might find interesting. Learn about a new platform being developed by the Institute for Medical Humanities, two projects from our Department of Physics that develop technologies for satellites, and virtual power plant technologies from the Durham Energy Institute. We've also highlighted that Sister Natalie Becquart has delivered the Bishop Dunn Memorial Lecture 2023 here at Durham University.
