Physics students’ success from across the region has been celebrated at the recent School Physicist of the Year (SPotY) awards.
The annual event, now in its ninth year, is organised by our Science Engagement team, with support from the Institute of Physics. In partnership with schools and colleges from across the region, the event provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of so many pupils studying Physics at both GCSE and A-Level.
Thirty one schools and colleges were represented at the event, from Durham city centre to Hartlepool and Newcastle. Pupils from each were recognised for their work, positive impact and outstanding contributions.
The evening celebrated students’ academic successes, those who have overcome challenges and others who have supported peers and wider pupil groups to create more inclusive communities.
Pupils and their families also had an opportunity to meet staff and students from the Physics Department, including previous SPotY award winners, Jake Mendelsohn, who attended Woodham Academy and is now a Physics undergraduate student at Durham, and Dr Sebastian Jaskiewicz who is now a Post Doctoral Research Associate in the Institute of Particle Physics Phenomenology (IPPP).
This event is one of many organised by the Science Engagement team who work in partnership with schools and communities across the North East, as the University continually develops opportunities to work with and support our communities across Durham and the wider region.
