As Durham University celebrates the 400th anniversary of the Shakespeare First Folio, performing arts productions will be held across the city in honour of the playwright.
Our talented student performers will be performing Shakespeare-themed theatre and musical performances throughout June.
The student performances will form part of a Summer of Shakespeare which is being organised in partnership with the Elysium Theatre and Durham Fringe Festival.
Castle Theatre Company Presents: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
In this romantic comedy, four young lovers attempt to resolve their confused relationships in an enchanted forest but are bewitched by mischievous fairies who are determined to intensify the chaos.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed by Castle Theatre Company, the oldest student theatre company in Durham. The company produces plays, poetry evenings and comedy cabarets as well as an annual Shakespeare tour around the UK and USA. It will be touring throughout the UK this summer.
Performances will take place at 2pm on Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 June at Fellows Garden, Durham Castle.

Perception Theatre Company Presents: Othello
A respected black general is tricked by a remorseless and vengeful villain who convinces the hero to distrust those who love him. This tragedy explores how passion, jealousy, and deception can be the downfall of great men.
Othello will be performed by Perception Theatre Company at 6.30pm on Wednesday 14, Thursday 15 and Friday 16 June at Shakespeare Hall, North Road.

Durham University Orchestral Society Presents: Tales & Legends
A musical telling of some of the world’s greatest tales and legends. The programme features Takashi Yoshimatsu’s White Landscapes, an idyllic portrayal of snow; Gabriel Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande, a musical depiction of Maurice Maeterlinck’s play of mystery, love, and jealousy; Sibelius’ Tempest Suite No.2, a musical retelling of Shakespeare’s story of magic, betrayal, love, and forgiveness; and Dances of Galánta, the intoxicating folk dances of Zoltán Kodály.
Tales and Legends will be performed by Durham University Orchestral Society, which is unique amongst Durham’s student orchestras for being an entirely student-run society. The society consists of a full-scale Symphony Orchestra and an elite Chamber Orchestra, each featuring a conductor and high calibre musicians.
The performance will take place at 7:30pm on Friday 9 June at Durham Town Hall.

Durham University Orchestral Society Presents: Shakespeare in Music
Join Durham University Orchestral Society's Symphony Orchestra for a musical journey through Shakespeare's bewitching love story, Romeo and Juliet. The orchestra will perform three of the greatest classical composers’ musical interpretations of the play, including Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture, Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Prokofiev's The Dance of the Knights.
The Orchestral Society will be joined by members of Durham Student Theatre who will intersperse Prokofiev’s music with performances of some of the most well-known and loved scenes from Romeo and Juliet.
The performance will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday 10 June at Durham Cathedral.
