A group of College friends and alumni, gathered for the launch of a new art exhibition Radical Non-Resistance and the Art of Transgression: Indelicate, Ungenteel, Vulgar & Outrageous Women (IUVOW), curated by local artist Philip Gatenby.
The event in the College Bar on Thursday 8 June launched this celebration of women from the North East and beyond.
Exhibition
The showcase explores a new order of social justice carried forward from radical non-resistance in the 19th Century by women of and from the North East of England.
Women highlighted include Elizabeth Pease, Josephine Butler and Harriet Martineau associated with Darlington, Northumberland and North Tyneside respectively. Each is known for advocacy, original thinking, activism, and support for the cause of women’s political inclusion and emancipation.
The exhibition includes paintings, portraits and photographs from the National Portrait Gallery and film screenings of video work made by Tereza Stehlikova in Prague.
Radical Non-Resistance and the Art of Transgression: Indelicate, Ungenteel, Vulgar & Outrageous Women is now open to the public until Thursday 6 July from 4-7pm, weekdays only.
