A new exhibition opening soon at our Oriental Museum depicts the horrors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombing.
‘Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki’ has been created by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, together with officials in Nagasaki.
It shows how the lives of ordinary Japanese people were irrevocably changed following the bombing.
The Japanese Ambassador, Hajime Hayashi, will visit Durham to personally open the exhibition which runs at the Museum from 7 June to 10 September, 2023.
Through photographs and artefacts, visitors to the exhibition will see the devastation wreaked by the 1945 atomic bombing in one of the most significant episodes of the Second World War.
The bombs introduced a new form of horror into the world and ushered in the nuclear age.
Many of the exhibits in ‘Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki’ were donated by the families of the victims, bringing visitors face-to-face with those who died in the atrocity.
They include photographs of life before and after the bombings, along with 20 objects kindly loaned from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.
