Durham University Choral Society joins with the Cleveland Philharmonic Choir to form a 200 strong choir, partnering with the Mowbray Orchestra to perform Elgar’s masterwork, The Dream of Gerontius at Sage Gateshead.
Conducted by John Forsyth MBE, Durham University Choral Society’s energetic and inspiring conductor, and joined by renowned soloists Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts as Gerontius, Anna Huntley as the Angel, and Morgan Pearse as the Priest and Angel of Agony this is a concert not to be missed.
Elgar’s setting of Cardinal John Henry Newman’s poem about a dying man’s prayer and ascent to Purgatory and later Heaven is deeply personal, dedicated by Elgar to God.
From moments of excitement to tender beauty, with the choirs representing both demons and angels at different points, The Dream of Gerontius is one of the finest English choral works ever written.
Durham University Choral Society is one of the finest symphonic choruses in the North East of England, and is made up of students from all degree programmes. In the past year they have collaborated with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Durham University Orchestral Society, and is excited to now collaborate with the Cleveland Philharmonic Choir, and recent concerts have received excellent reviews.
This performance will be DUCS’ first time performing in the Sage Gateshead, one of the finest concert halls in the country and one of the best acoustics in the world. With over 250 performers, including 110 Durham students, this is certainly not a concert to miss!
