Students Share their Stories during National Storytelling Week

The MA in Creative Writing is taught by award-winning writers Dr Paul Batchelor, Dr Naomi Booth, Kayo Chingonyi, Professor Claire Harman, Sunjeev Sahota, and Dr Sam Riviere. Students are encouraged to develop their knowledge of writing poetry and prose fiction as well as studying a broad range of literature from the 20th and 21st centuries, producing their own original work in response.

Izzy Bremner: Bumpkin  

Izzy Bremner is a student at John Snow College. She studied English at Durham and is now studying on the Creative Writing MA course. This abstract is from a novel she is currently working on called Bumpkin, about a girl navigating her twenties and moving to London for the first time. 

Paul Haswell: Attack of the Flenkels 

Paul Haswell is studying for a Master’s in Creative Writing at Ustinov College. This is from a short story called Attack of the Flenkels, which follows a man who is taken to another world from his back garden. The story aims to capture lost youth and the desire to feel alive again, setting the fantastical within the real. Paul loves writing about his native county of Derbyshire.  

Ellie Dyer-Brown: Bluff  

Ellie Dyer-Brown is a freelance writer, currently studying for an MA in Creative Writing at St Aidan’s College. She has a particular interest in short fiction centred on folk stories and myths. She co-edits this year's Peninsula anthology of student fiction, and also contributes comment pieces for the Palatinate.
