We are looking forward to an exciting two days of Winter Congregation ceremonies in Durham Cathedral for our graduates. A total of six ceremonies will take place on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 January 2023. Students from 120 countries will graduate in the magnificent setting of Durham Cathedral, in the company of their families and friends.
We will be celebrating the achievements of this year’s cohort of graduates and welcoming back students whose graduation was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic to enjoy the event.
We’re extremely proud of our graduates and know that they’ll go on to achieve outstanding things around the world, acting as wonderful ambassadors for our University, our city and the region.
Professor Karen O’Brien, Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University, said: “We are greatly looking forward to welcoming our students and their loved ones for this very special Congregation.
"They have worked hard and we wish them every success in the future. We know as Durham University graduates they will be highly sought after by employers worldwide, and we hope that they will maintain close links with us here at Durham.”
New Venue
This year graduating students will be welcomed to ceremonies in Durham Cathedral as normal, with the Teaching and Learning Centre as the new venue for the congregation fair activities.
A short walk from Palace Green, the Teaching and Learning Centre also offers a modern and comfortable environment for robing, refreshments and photography, bringing everything under one roof.
There will be a shuttle bus service for those with mobility issues running between Palace Green and the Teaching and Learning Centre.
An honorary degree will also be awarded during the Congregation ceremonies. The recipient is Claire Malcolm, the founding CEO of New Writing North.
Claire will be honoured for her exceptional work with the Durham Book Festival.
In 2021 Claire was awarded an MBE for services to Literature and Young People in the North East of England, recognising her achievements with New Writing North.
She leads the project "Well Read" that uses writing to support wellbeing and mental health, working with our pioneering psychologists and researchers.
Our honorary graduates are among the very best in their chosen fields and set an inspiring example to our graduates as they embark on their new lives and careers.
All Congregation ceremonies will be streamed live online, so that anyone who isn’t able to travel to Durham can still enjoy the celebrations.
