Shaid Mahmood, our Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion), has been honoured by King Charles III.
Shaid became our first PVC-EDI when he joined us in February 2022. He has been made an MBE in the annual New Year Honours List announced by the UK Government on behalf of His Majesty The King.
Shaid received the award for services for further education in Leeds and West Yorkshire. Alongside his University role, he is Chair of Governors of Luminate Education Group and Chair of the Association of Colleges. Before joining Durham, he was Chief Officer for Communities and Transformation and Change at Leeds City Council.
He said: “I’m humbled and overwhelmed by the honour. I’ve accepted it in the memory of my late mother, my family and friends who have supported me and to the many dedicated, hard-working board members, staff, leaders, and managers that have contributed so much to the cause and taught me so much on the way. It’s been a privilege to lead them. This honour is dedicated to them all.”
Congratulations to all those honoured
The New Year Honours List recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK.
Shaid is one of several members of the University community included. He is to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Professor Karen O’Brien, our Vice-Chancellor and Warden, extended her congratulations to all those honoured.
