Our Chief Information Officer (CIO), John Hemingway, has been awarded CIO of the Year at the UCISA (Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association) Awards 2022. These awards recognise, celebrate, and promote the outstanding achievements and innovation of staff supporting technology in UCISA member organisations.
The UCISA CIO of the Year Award celebrates outstanding contribution to IT by a senior leader who demonstrates clear vision, positive transformation, and professional excellence.
Leading Durham University’s digital strategy
John has responsibility for ensuring our information services and systems support the delivery of the University’s ambitious strategy. He leads on implementing an underpinning digital strategy, supporting teaching, research, learning, administration, and the wider student experience.
As winner of the award, John will act as a role model not only within the University and the Computing and Information Services (CIS) department but throughout the wider UCISA community.
Changing the perception of IT within the University
John was nominated for this award by our Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Antony Long, who said:
“John has fundamentally reshaped the IT department and its corresponding services through a crystal-clear digital strategy and project roadmap that has delivered fundamental improvements to functionality aligned to target dates. As an experienced mentor, in and outside of the University, John creates a culture of empowerment in his team and across the University.”
Upon receipt of the award, John Hemingway said: "It is a great honour to be awarded CIO of the year and be recognised by your peers. This award is testament to all the hard work over the last three years by everyone in CIS and the wider University. I am very proud of my team and hope that they too will be delighted we have been recognised."
The ceremony took place on Wednesday 30 March during UCISA22 Leadership Conference in Manchester, an annual event looking at the future challenges and opportunities for digital leaders in education.
Congratulations to John on this wonderful achievement.
