The third annual performance of the ‘Never Give Up’ Variety Show, will take place at The Assembly Rooms Theatre, on Sunday 6 March. The show is the result of an on-going collaboration between our student musicians and local charity RTProjects.
The show will include an original piece of music, based on a poem entitled ‘Breathing’, written by RTProjects’ founder, Beano. The song will be performed with service users from the charity and a choir of students from Footnotes a capella choir, Gospel Choir and Jazz Society, accompanied by a string quartet of our student musicians.
Championing mental health
RTProjects is a charity based in Gilesgate, Durham which supports people struggling with their mental health and those at risk of suicide. By providing group art therapy sessions and one-to-one support at the ‘Open Art Surgery’, the charity gives people the opportunity for creative expression, and genuine human connection in a safe, supportive community. Their approach is built around hope and love.
Music Co-ordinator, Eve Battersby explained why our students are keen to be in involved in producing the concert alongside RTProjects; “It’s a celebration of the musical variety we have going on across County Durham, and a show of togetherness in the face of the national epidemic of worsening mental health.”
The aim of the concert is to bring together students and members of the local community, to raise awareness of suicide and mental health in an emotional and powerful show. ‘Never Give Up’ will also feature a charity auction and raffle, with prizes including a three-night stay in an Air B&B near Beamish.
