Outreach

One of our key aims is to inspire the next generation of physicists to join us in our quest to understand the fundamental nature of our Universe. We encourage young people, teachers and the wider community to develop their interest in science through outreach programmes featuring our cutting-edge research and teaching.

We work with communities, industry partners and hundreds of schools across the region to deliver science programmes, activities and events. These include in-school interactive workshops, visits to the Ogden Centre, and our Celebrate Science festival which has attracted over 66,000 children and their families since 2010.

A collaborative artwork by our Ogden Trust North East partnership schools.

During Ogden at 20, Science Outreach and Engagement invited pupils in our Ogden Trust North East partnership schools to contribute to this collaborative artwork.

They worked with digital artist Petra Szemán to explore their own questions about the Universe and produced art and animations. Pupils from Woodham Academy, in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, came into the Ogden Centre to present the artwork to an enthusiastic audience which included Sir Peter Ogden and family.

Science Outreach

Our award-winning activities aim to stimulate interest in science and to encourage a better understanding of the application of science to our everyday lives. Our activities build on our excellent scientific research and teaching, involving the local community in the excitement of science.

Ogden Schools’ Partnerships in the North East

The Ogden Trust aims to increase the uptake of physics post-16 by supporting physics education and engagement for all young people (4-18), particularly those in under-represented groups. The Trust supports schools, teachers, projects and programmes that are committed to enhancing physics teaching and learning.

The Trust supports partnerships of schools to enhance physics teaching and learning.

The Ogden Trust North East schools' partnerships involve over 150 schools across the region, many in areas identified as facing multiple indices of deprivation. The partnerships work with many different organisations, running a huge variety of programmes and events.

More than 66,000 7-11 year-olds and their families have come along to Celebrate Science since our first festival in 2010.
Over 4,000 13-15-year-old pupils and their teachers from 42 local secondary schools have attended the last five Durham Schools’ Science Festivals.
Over 500 third-year undergraduate students have participated in the Science into Schools Module working with more than 130 local schools since 2006.
Over 290 Year 10 and Year 12 students from schools across the North East have received awards at our annual Schools’ Physicist of the Year event.
