Located at Durham's Historic Heart
We are located at the heart of Durham's historic city centre, on the doorstep of Durham Castle (built in 952) and Durham Cathedral (built between the late 11th and early 12th century). Our historic library and archive collections are accessible to staff and students and have been growing each year since the university was founded two centuries ago.
Getting around Durham
Our campus buildings are located around Durham city centre, within easy walking distance of each other and the bus and train stations. The city centre is safe and very walkable, so it is feasible to live in Durham without owning a car.
Where is Durham in the UK?
Durham is a small city in the North-East of England, slightly south of Newcastle. There are bus and train stations within easy walking distance of our campus, with connections to other UK cities including Newcastle, York, Manchester, Edinburgh and London. By train, Durham is about 3 hours 45 minutes from London, 3 hours from Birmingham, 1 hour 45 minutes from Edinburgh and 45 minutes from York. Newcastle International Airport is accessible by train in under one hour.

Getting here by train
A number of train operators offer direct and regular routes to Durham Railway Station, including London and Edinburgh. Durham is around 3 hours 45 minutes from London, 3 hours from Birmingham, 2½ hours from Manchester, 1 hour 45 minutes from Edinburgh and 45 minutes from York.
A taxi will take you from the station to any College in about 5 minutes and you can walk to the city centre in 10 minutes.
Getting here by road
Durham city centre is only two miles from the A1(M). Leave the motorway at Junction 62 on the A690 Durham - Sunderland road and follow signs to Durham City Centre.
Public transport
There are several express coach services daily from most major cities. Durham is well served by both regional express services and the local bus network. From the city bus station - a short walk from the railway station - a bus service runs every 15 minutes past the Colleges on South Road.
Getting here by air
Durham is 30 minutes' drive from Newcastle International Airport and about 40 minutes from Teesside International Airport. Both have regular domestic and international flights. Durham is linked to Newcastle Airport by rail and metro.
Getting here by sea
Scheduled ferry services link the River Tyne to The Netherlands.
