Funding you may be eligible for as a mature postgraduate student

We are committed to supporting the best students irrespective of financial circumstances. The following scholarships and bursaries are either funded by the University, through partnerships with external organisations or through generous donations from alumni and friends of the University.

In addition to the scholarships below, other options for funding your studies may also be available.

Please ensure that you submit an academic application to Durham University by the deadline date of the scholarship you are applying for.

Funding for mature postgraduate students starting a course at Durham University in 2024-25

Support What is it? Who's it for? How much? When can I apply?
Postgraduate Master’s Loan A UK government student loan for master's degree students. UK students starting a master's degree at a UK university. Up to £12,471 You can now apply for funding for the 2025 to 2026 academic year.
Postgraduate Doctoral Loan A UK government student loan for PhD  students. UK students starting a PhD at a UK university. Up to £29,390 You can now apply for funding for the 2025 to 2026 academic year.
Studentships and Doctoral Training Studentships are postgraduate positions that have funding attached for fees, living expenses or both. They’re mainly funded by UK Research and Innovation. Eligibility criteria varies depending on the scheme. Amounts vary depending on the scheme. You can now apply for funding for the 2025 to 2026 academic year.
Private loans Private loans to fund your study. These are usually at a higher rate of interest than UK government loans. Eligibility criteria varies according to the loan provider's terms. Various, depending on the loan provider. Varies - check with individual loan providers for details.
Durham University Postgraduate Student Support Scholarships A grant, paid in termly instalments. UK postgraduate students from low-and middle-income households. Terms and conditions apply (see link for full details). Up to £3,000 for PG taught courses or up to £2,000 for MRes courses. After applying for your course and before 12th September.
Postgraduate Solutions Study Bursaries A grant for postgraduate students, subject to an application process. Postgraduate UK students studying at a UK university. 5 bursaries available of up to £2,000 After you have accepted your university place but before 30th September for the following academic year.
Disabled Students' Allowance  A Government-funded grant system for disabled postgraduate students. Amounts awarded are based on individual requirements rather than income.  Postgraduate students (full-time or part-time) in England, Wales or Northern Ireland with a mental health issue or long-term illness   Before September 24-26 depending on specifics. Alumni Fee Scholarship  Students who have completed an undergraduate degree at Durham are eligible for a 10-15% discount, depending on the PGT course studied. Students of all nationalities who have completed an undergraduate degree at Durham and would like to progress to a postgraduate taught (PGT) degree.

15% discount for:

  • MSc Economics (L1T109, L1T409, L1T309)
  • MSc Finance (all routes - N3K109, N3K209, N3K309. N3K409, N3KC09)

10% discount for:

  • All other programmes
This discount will be applied automatically.
