Celebrating World Book Day 2024
To celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7 March, we’ve got some exciting events planned here at University Library and Collections!
Will you find love on a Blind Date with a Book?
We’re holding a Blind Date with a Book event Bill Bryson Library, where you can take a chance on love and borrow a book to read without seeing its cover or leafing through its pages first.
Titles have been carefully selected from student recommendations made on last year’s Need to Read board (keep reading to find out more!) and will be waiting anxiously on our dating scene bookshelves. The books will be dressed in their finest paper with hints written on the front as to what you’ll find inside.
How it works
- Choose a book from our dating scene bookshelf and borrow it using our self-service machines – you can then unwrap it to reveal your choice
- Head to your favourite spot to read your book – if you like it, you can even introduce it to your family and friends
- Once your date has ended, simply return your book to the library – it'll always be there if you want to see it again!
‘Need to Read’ board
Why not share your own recommendations of titles you’ve enjoyed on our ‘Need to Read’ boards?
Located at Bill Bryson Library, Barker Research Library and in our study spaces on Level 2 of the Teaching and Learning Centre, simply write the author and title onto the board to share your suggestion with others.
Following your recommendations from 2023, we’ve bought over 80 titles which are now available to borrow, and many have been added to our dating scene bookshelf for others to discover! Recommendations received this year will also be put forward to be bought and added to the Library, giving you the opportunity to help shape our collections for current and future students.
Book Giveaway at ISC Library
We will be running a book giveaway at ISC Library where new copies of selected titles will be wrapped and hidden in the Library - if you find one, it’s yours to keep or pass on!
These titles have been chosen from recommendations made by staff and students during World Book Day last year. Don’t forget to tag us on Facebook, X (previously known as Twitter) or Instagram to share what you find.
