Welcoming our new Head of Department Professor Mark Stoutenberg
We are delighted to welcome Professor Mark Stoutenberg who joined us in the new year as of Head of Department for Sport and Exercise Sciences.
Mark earned a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology and an M.S. in Public Health at the University of Miami. After working as in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami for 8 years, he moved on to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he spent 3.5 years developing a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) degree in Chronic Disease Prevention and Control. In 2020, Professor Stoutenberg moved to Temple University where he served as the Chair of the Department of Kinesiology in the College of Public Health, before moving on to his current role as the Head of the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences (DSES) at Durham University.
Professor Stoutenberg’s research, grounded in implementation science, focuses on integrating physical activity into health settings and connecting at-risk patients to community resources by establishing clinic-community referral pathways. His work includes ongoing and recently completed projects in India, South Africa, Thailand, and the United States. Additionally, Professor Stoutenberg is a key contributor to Exercise is Medicine (EIM), a signature initiative of the American College of Sports Medicine. Through his association with EIM, Professor Stoutenberg is active globally with ongoing projects with physical activity and health leaders throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
