Cardiotoxicity - Breast Cancer Research
Chelsea Penny is currently an MA by Research student in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Chelsea's research project is looking at cardiotoxicity. Cardiotoxicity occurs when heart function is compromised due to chemotherapy or other cancer treatments such as radiotherapy.
The research includes scanning the participants common carotid artery to see if I can identify any differences between the groups of participants. I will be measuring peak systolic velocity and end diastolic velocity, as well as the intima media thickness of the common carotid artery wall.
Chelsea said "I am hoping that this research can add some valuable information to see if we can identify cardiotoxicity in breast cancer patients who have been treated with chemotherapy. This will also allow an investigation to see if there are any differences between the groups. I am hoping to continue on this MRes into a PhD, as I am very passionate about the research, and I want to help make a difference to people's lives"
