When Alan Martin first arrived, the physics department gained only 15 first year students, which would, if continued, spell the end of the department. He spoke in their first meeting in 1963 of how to amend this issue and the next year they had gained 39 new students. In the video on the left, Alan Martin discusses the department staff that facilitated such an explosion in numbers.
