In 1985, R.S. Ellis became the first Professor of Astronomy since 1911.
In this year, the Centre for Particle Theory was established, uniting efforts between the maths and physics departments. It had two co-directors, one from each department, and by 2024 had amassed 34 permanent members, and more than 60 research staff and students. The Centre was responsible for the creation of a new MSc qualification in Elementary Particle Theory, and now includes the IPPP which was established in 1999.
