The Azerbaijani Ambassador standing in front of a PowerPoint presentation

Durham Law School had the honour of welcoming His Excellency Elin Süleymanov, the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. His presentation, Lessons from COP29: The Contributions of Azerbaijan to a Greener World, explored key themes, including Azerbaijan’s strategic vision for COP29, its commitment to global sustainability efforts, and its expanding role as a regional leader in energy transition.

During his address, His Excellency provided insightful perspectives on Azerbaijan’s COP29 priorities, highlighting the country’s approach to balancing its historical role as an energy producer with an increasing focus on renewable energy and sustainable development. He discussed Azerbaijan’s carbon reduction initiatives, investments in green energy, and the wider implications of its COP29 presidency for international climate negotiations.

Following the presentation, students and faculty engaged in a dynamic Q&A session, followed by a reception organised by Durham Law Society members, including Jamie Glaisher, Ian Mak, and Riyad Babayev Mamedova. This provided attendees with the opportunity to discuss Azerbaijan’s contributions to a just energy transition, the significance of COP29 in shaping long-term climate policy, and potential collaborations between Azerbaijan and institutions such as Durham University in climate research and policy development.

This event served as an invaluable platform for Durham Law School to actively engage in global climate discussions and enhance its understanding of the legal and policy frameworks shaping international environmental governance. His Excellency’s visit reaffirmed the university’s dedication to fostering dialogue on pressing global challenges, including climate change, sustainability, and the evolving legal landscape surrounding environmental regulation.

We extend our sincere gratitude to His Excellency for his time, valuable insights, and engagement with our students and faculty. His visit has significantly enriched our understanding of COP29’s objectives and Azerbaijan’s role in driving meaningful global climate action.
