The Economist magazine has run a feature about the Life in the UK test centred around an interview with Durham Law School’s Professor Thom Brooks, Professor of Law and Government.

The feature discusses criticisms of the test highlighted by Professor Brooks over many years. Stemming from his well known 2013 report describing the test “like a bad pub quiz,” Professor Brooks has noted that this test for British citizenship is a test few British citizens seem able to pass, raising serious concerns its utility as a marker that new citizens have shared knowledge for active citizenship already held by current citizens. His work has identified factual errors and trivial information that has creeped into the test since its launch – while remaining a passionate advocate for the test’s reform and continued use.
