4th Judicial Roundtable 2024

The fourth international Judicial Roundtable at the end of April 2024 in Durham explored topics within Technology and Climate Change, with judges and leading policymakers from around the world.

The conference was attended by judges from Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, India, the UK, Germany, Indonesia, and Korea and leading policymakers to advance thought leadership on key issues affecting commercial courts and the international commercial dispute resolution (“ICDR”) system.

Durham Law School, the Durham International Dispute Resolution Institute and Singapore Courts organised the roundtable, with the generous help from the sponsors Anselmo Reyes KK and Singapore Academy of Law

The 4th edition of the Roundtable centred on two main themes: technology (with three sub-topics: artificial intelligence, data protection and privacy, and disinformation) and climate change. Leading academic and policy speakers addressed the Roundtable on these topics, and the attending judges from the courts across different jurisdictions discussed the interface between the topics and justice systems.

Student involvement and Roundtable Book

The Dean of Durham Law School, Prof Volker Roeben, commented, "The four-day judicial roundtable, the first of its kind held outside of Asia, demonstrated the Law School's strategic commitment to internationalisation. During the roundtable, there was opportunity for our law students to engage in fireside chats with judges from their respective regions (Chinese judges meeting Chinese students and Indian judges mingling with Indian students, as well as Hong Kong and Singapore judges). These also served as a catalyst for exploring job opportunities and fostering career networking among our student body."

Student volunteers from Durham Law School also assisted in the transcription of the discussions for the purposes of publishing a book. The book projects is led by Durham Law School Honorary Professor Anselmo Reyes and will be published through Hart Publishing
