Join Nigel Swycher (Chad’s/Law) and Richard Kempner (Aidan’s/ Law) for presentations from two alumni who graduated from Durham in the 1980s and reached the pinnacle of the Intellectual Property profession.

The presentations, which will be followed by a “fireside chat” and Q&A will cover:
· The breadth of IP in practice, and career decisions along the way
· Closing the gap between law and practice, and how to prepare
· Keeping it fresh - why IP is never dull
· Why AI will change both IP law and practice
· Establishing your own firm or company - what makes an entrepreneur in a law firm?
Students interested in the legal profession, and particularly those with an interest in intellectual property, are encouraged to attend.
Nigel Swycher
Nigel graduated with first class honours, Law from Durham in 1984. His career started with Slaughter and May, becoming a partner in the IP group, and later co-head of the Technology, Media and Telecoms Group. From 2007-2011 Nigel was head of technology at Olswang (now CMS). In 2013 he co-founded Cipher, the first AI powered patent analytics platform, which was sold to LexisNexis in 2023. Nigel is currently a strategic adviser at LexisNexis Intellectual Property and co-host of the Evolving IP podcast. Nigel has for many years been recognised by IAM 300 as an expert in IP strategy.
Richard Kempner
Richard graduated with first class honours, Law from Durham in 1984. Richard is recognised as one of the UK’s leading Intellectual Property specialists with over 30 years’ experience in all aspects of UK contentious and non-contentious IP law, with particular emphasis on dispute resolution, relating to patents, trade marks (most recently acting for Tesco against Lidl), copyright, passing off and confidential information. He was the founder of Kempner & Partners which later merged to become Haseltine Lake Kempner. In June 2024, Richard launched a coaching and mentoring consultancy.
