Become a Mentor for the Durham Law Society Mentoring Scheme

Below is a call for mentors from the student Law Society:

My name is Fathima Ashiq, and I am the Mentoring Scheme Coordinator for the Durham Law Society for the academic year 2024/25.

About Us

At the Durham Law Society, we are dedicated to supporting the next generation of legal professionals. Our Mentoring Scheme was established to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice by pairing aspiring legal professionals with experienced mentors. Last year, the scheme expanded to over 100 mentors, who provided crucial guidance to students.

My mentor’s guidance was invaluable throughout the application season. She offered clear and strategic advice, meticulously reviewing my applications and CV, helping me to refine them to a professional standard. Her support was instrumental in my securing a placement in the Latham & Watkins first-year scheme, a milestone I attribute in large part to her dedicated mentorship”.

A current second-year student who was a mentee last year.

Join the Durham University Bar Society Barrister Mentoring Scheme

Each academic year, the Durham University Bar Society proudly runs its Barrister Mentoring Scheme, designed to support and guide our 250+ members aspiring to join the Bar. For the 2024-2025 academic year, we are seeking experienced barristers to mentor our dedicated students from September 2024 to July 2025.

Mentorship Expectations

As a mentor, you will provide ongoing support to your assigned student through email and possibly occasional meetings. Your guidance will include advice on applications and career development, helping them navigate the complexities of pursuing a legal career. We aim to match students with mentors who share their legal interests, allowing for flexible interactions that can be virtual or in-person.

One of our past mentees shared their experience:

“The mentorship I received was invaluable. My mentor provided me with practical advice and insights that were crucial for my career development. Their support made a significant difference in my journey to the Bar.”

We have thus decided to expand our community to the Durham University Law School Alumni.

How to Get Involved

We encourage alumni who are interested in becoming mentors to complete our Google Form. Alternatively, you can email our Mentorship Officer at bar.society@durham.ac.uk.

Your participation not only helps shape the future of aspiring legal professionals but also offers a platform to showcase the commitment of your Chambers to mentorship and professional development. We also promote the involvement of participating Chambers on our social media, highlighting your valuable contributions.

Deadline
