North American Connections

The American History Research Cluster brings together scholars working across two continents and roughly 400 years of history, from the beginning of European colonization to the present day. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, Indigenous histories, the history of gender and sexuality, the history of empire, the history of slavery and emancipation, the history of violence, legal history, the history of sport, the history of science, the history of food, architecture and the built environment, the American Civil War and its aftershocks, and U.S. foreign policy. We seek to understand how centuries of colonization and migration shaped the Americas and, in turn, how the Americas have come to shape the world. To that end, we also seek to build links with scholars of the Americas working across other disciplines, including those in government, law, and literature.

Colleagues within the cluster have produced prize-winning books and articles and have reached broad public audiences through their writing and speaking engagements. With one of the largest cohorts of American historians outside the United States, Durham has established itself as a leader in this dynamic field.
