Research Publications 2024

Members of the Department of English Studies at Durham University made significant contributions to the field of literary studies throughout 2024. These recent works span a wide range of topics, from early modern science, Romantic-era repertory theatre, Victorian childhood, and digital humanities, reflecting the department’s ongoing commitment to innovation and scholarly excellence.

The Precocious Child in Victorian Literature and Culture

Authored book by Dr Roisín Laing (Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow).

This book examines representations of precocity in Victorian textual culture – canonical literature, children’s fiction, scientific texts, and writing by children – to argue that precocity challenges the idea of progress. It considers how practitioners of literature and science from Wordsworth to Freud represented human development, and the way in which Darwin’s “non-progressive model of evolution” troubled the existing model of progression by stages (from childhood inexperience to adult maturity and understanding). Roisín Laing argues that the precocious child undermines the equation of growth with progress, and thereby facilitates other ways of imagining both individual and species development. The idea represented by the precocious child in Victorian culture – that the adult is not necessarily an improvement on the child, the human not necessarily an improvement on the ape – still troubles us today.

The Poesy of Scientia in Early Modern England

Edited book by Professor Subha Mukherji (Cambridge) and Dr Elizabeth Swann (Durham).

 

This book explores interconnections between the modes of knowing that we now associate with the rubrics ‘literature’ and ‘science’ at a formative point in their early development. Rather than simply tracing lines of influence, it focuses on how both literary texts and natural philosophy engage with materiality, language, affect, and form. Some essays are invested in how early modern science adopts and actively experiments with rhetorical and poetic modes and expression, while others emphasize a shared investment in natural philosophical topics—alchemy, chance, or astrology for example—that move among the period’s observational texts and its literature, highlighting the participation of literary texts in the production of experimental knowledge. Organised around the broad themes of creation and transformation, mediation and communication, and interpretation and imaginative speculation, the essays collectively probe the presumed dichotomy between science’s schematizing and taxonomic ambitions, and the fertile and volatile creative energies of literary texts.

British Writing, Propaganda and Cultural Diplomacy in the Second World War and Beyond

Edited book by Beatriz Lopez, Professor James Smith, and Dr Guy Woodward.

 

This book offers the first sustained analysis of the interactions between British writers, propaganda and culture from the Second World War to the Cold War. It traces the involvement of a series of major cultural figures in domestic and international propaganda campaigns and throws new light on the global deployment of British propaganda and cultural diplomacy in colonial and post-colonial theatres such as Cyprus, India and Sierra Leone. Chapters re-evaluate the propaganda work of prominent writers including Arthur Koestler and Dylan Thomas in the light of new archival research, study how organisations including the BBC, British Council and Ministry of Information engaged with new media forms, analyse cultural representations of propaganda service and investigate how British literature and culture was deployed and projected as a form of soft power across the globe.

Charlotte Mew: Poetics, Bodies, Ecologies

Edited book by Dr Francesca Bratton (Maynooth), Dr Megan Girdwood (Edinburgh) and Dr Fraser Riddell (Durham).

 

This collection of essays explores the life and works of the British poet and author of short stories Charlotte Mew (1869-1928). It represents the first volume dedicated solely to critical engagement with the full range of Mew’s poetry, fiction and essays. Mew moved within a remarkable range of literary and intellectual circles, from The Yellow Book in the 1890s to Bloomsbury’s Poetry Bookshop in the 1910s. As such, her work challenges traditional distinctions between literary periods and sits within the more expansive framework of the long nineteenth century and its legacies. Each chapter contextualises Mew’s oeuvre by examining her experiments with poetic and narrative genres in relation to her wider late Victorian and early modernist intellectual milieu. The volume draws together literary scholars working across the fields of poetry and poetics, decadence, modernism, ecocriticism and queer theory, while illustrating the particular stylistic and thematic complexities of Mew’s writing.

Digital Humanities and the Cyberspace Decade,1990-2001: A World Elsewhere

Setting out a history of cyberspace and its relationship with the discipline that was to become digital humanities, this book is an account of an often-forgotten period of internet history in the 1990s when this medium was in its infancy. It provides a detailed account of the concepts of 'cyberspace' and the 'virtual', which were characteristic of a perception that using the internet allowed users to enter a separate space from everyday life- a world elsewhere. In doing so, it argues that this libertarian idea of the internet framed it as a new frontier, where the rules of the everyday world did not and should not apply, and where the individual could find freedom. These early norms and the regrettable lack of regulation that was a consequence of them, this book argues, contributed to many of current issues with internet media. including of toxic communication, disinformation and over-commercialisation.

 

 

Stock Pieces: British Repertory Theatre, 1760-1830

What do we gain from watching a familiar play for the nth time? This was a crucial question for Romantic-period theatre managers, who, to deliver varied programmes, relied on a repertoire of ‘stock’ entertainments performed in alternation with the latest plays. Repertory theatre was not new to the Romantic period, but it took on additional purchase at a time when the playhouse was not simply a site for entertainment but a government-controlled cultural institution and business, subject to sometimes extreme financial, political, and ideological pressures. Through an innovative selection of case studies drawn from deep archival research, Stock Pieces juxtaposes canonical with otherwise forgotten entertainments; unites the period’s professional and amateur dramatic cultures; and spans British metropolitan, provincial, and imperial geographies. The picture that emerges is fresh and compelling. Stock Pieces sheds light on the mechanics of stock piece status, the Romantic afterlives of Shakespeare’s near contemporaries (whose popular appeal declined as his increased), and the work of various agents (from pantomime arrangers to enslaved performers in Jamaica) who contested the repertoire’s received aesthetic and cultural values. It also explores the extent to which investments in the abolitionist cause were remediated by stock pieces that revived and re-enacted the spectral violence of slavery and the slave trade – for various purposes.
