We are ranked 33rd in the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, once again confirming Durham's place among the world's top 50 institutions at which to study English.
The rankings, announced in March 2025, assessed institutions across the world, based on academic and employer reputation, citations per academic paper, impact and productivity of research and international research collaboration factors. We have now sat in the world's top 50 for English for several years.
Recent research carried out by colleagues in our department includes the first comprehensive study of British writing and propaganda in the Second World War, a history of digital humanities and cyberspace in the 1990s, and archival research into repertory theatre during the Romantic period.
Our broad subject range is made possible by our large and international community of more than 800 students, researchers and academics. Our research and teaching is supported with a busy programme of events including lectures, seminars, reading and discussion groups.
Durham is consistently ranked as one of the world’s leading universities and among the top ten in the UK. It is ranked joint 89th in the QS World University Rankings 2025, 6th in the Guardian University Guide 2025 and 5th in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025.
