School Visit

An outreach team comprising technician Mr Gary Parker and assistant professor Dr Stefan Szyniszewski from Durham University's Department of Engineering recently made an impactful visit to Peases West Primary School in Billy Row, Crook. The team engaged year 4 students in a series of educational demonstrations aimed at fostering interest in engineering.

During the visit, students were enthralled by educational demonstrations, including observing the behaviour of ping-pong balls in an open mini-wind tunnel. The demonstration highlighted the impact of flow symmetry on the position of spherical ping-pong balls, emphasising how imperfect or indented balls were swiftly ejected by the airflow.

In addition to these demonstrations, students actively participated in a practical activity, constructing spatial trusses using paper tubes. Using conventional office punch holes and screws and nuts, the students created joints, enabling them to assemble intricate structures like 3D pyramids. This hands-on experience not only nurtured creativity but also facilitated practical learning. Each student was given their own paper truss to take home, enhancing their engagement with engineering concepts.

The primary goal of the visit was to stimulate the students' interest in engineering, with the hope that some may be inspired to pursue engineering as a future career. The team expressed their gratitude to Miss Morton and Mrs Patterson, the school staff who hosted these enriching activities. Excited about the positive response, the team eagerly anticipates returning to Peases West Primary School for another engaging visit in the following year.
