Post-offer Visit Day

Welcome to Earth Sciences

Congratulations on receiving your offer to study at Durham University. We are really looking forward to welcoming you to the Department of Earth Sciences and to our Post-offer Visit Day for the Earth Science programmes.

What to Expect

During the day we will demonstrate the structure of our degree programmes and provide further information on the modules you can study, what you will need and not need before you arrive to study, and the exciting opportunities that you can get involved in when you are here. We will also provide a series of activities that demonstrate some of the ways in which we teach practical classes in the department. These activities may involve examining lumps of lava or volcanic rock to understand how they form, getting practical experience with environmental or geophysical monitoring kit, or looking down a microscope at the remnants of frozen magma chambers to try and understand how igneous rocks crystallise.

You can also speak to our student ambassadors about life in the department and in Durham, to chat to our teaching staff, and take a tour of our teaching and research facilities, if you have not already done so.
We hope that you will have an enjoyable, interesting day and that your visit will help inform you about your future university career. We look forward to seeing you and to answering any questions you may have.
