My name is Matthew Johnson, and I am the current Head of Department at a very exciting time, as Durham University is investing in us allowing us to grow considerably. We recently moved into our new home: the £42 million building for Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science. We have been recruiting new staff across all our research groups, with numbers rising from 18 to 55 over the past 5 years, and we have also invested heavily in providing our students outstanding departmental facilities to support teaching and learning. We have a NVIDIA compute centre with a large cluster of modern GPUs for undergraduate Computer Science projects, and we demonstrate our commitment to cutting edge research-led teaching via our specialist labs (a Vision Lab, an Optics Lab, a Heavy-duty Lab and the University run Hazan Venture Lab to support student enterprise).
We are proud of the fact that 100% of our Computer Science students are in paid employment or further study 15 months after graduation across all of our programmes. We are also ranked within the top 10 by the Complete University Guide 2023, where we are joint 1st in the UK for Graduate Prospects, meaning that our Computer Science graduates are amongst the most employable in the country.
We hope that you will have an enjoyable day and that your visit will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have, and to gather the information you need to make decisions about your future university career.
I look forward to welcoming you during the day!
Matthew Johnson
The Department of Computer Science has a wonderful friendly and supportive culture located within our beautiful historic cathedral city, where the University has long traditions but modern values. We are working hard to make Durham the number one destination for women Computer Science undergraduates and have recently formed a Durham University Women in Tech group that holds events and brings in inspiring external speakers.
