The international workshop "Medicinal Knowledge and Practices Facing Plato: New Perspectives on the Role of Medical Expertise in the Platonic Corpus" will explore the intersection of Plato's philosophical and literary works with medicine - both as a form of expertise and as a body of doctrine found in the Corpus Hippocraticum and other medical texts.
The workshop will focus on two main themes: 1)Representations of medicine and doctors in Plato's works; 2) Plato's contributions to medical thought.
This event follows on from previous conferences on Plato held at Durham (Plato and Hesiod, Plato and Comedy, Plato and Homer). While this workshop has a distinct focus and incorporates the medical humanities, it continues the tradition of examining Plato's engagement with other intellectual traditions.
The workshop is the result of the collaboration between the Department of Classics and Ancient History of Durham University and the Dipartimento di Civiltà e Forme del Sapere of the University of Pisa, and will involve scholars from the UK, Europe and the USA.
