cuthberts.vp@durham.ac.uk

Dr Matthew Mills will be joining St Cuthbert’s Society in March 2025. Presently, he is part of the Executive Leadership Team at Durham Cathedral in the role of Head of Development. He has oversight of fundraising activity, is a founding member of the team behind Durham Cathedral Institute, and represents the Cathedral on the Strategic Partnership Board of Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally from Northumberland, Matthew also spent more than a decade in Oxford where he served as Acting Dean and Lecturer in Medieval Studies at Regent’s Park College and as Lecturer in Theology at St John’s College.
Matthew has been an honorary fellow within the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham since 2021. His academic work is concerned with medieval life and thought, as well as the interplay between medieval ideas and contemporary theology, philosophy, and ethics. His publications include articles on Anselm of Canterbury and Iris Murdoch, a co-authored volume, Forgiveness and Restorative Justice: Perspectives from Christian Theology (Palgrave, 2021), and a forthcoming monograph, Blessed Mary and the Monks of England: Benedictines and Cistercians, 1000-1215 (CUA Press, 2025). Dr Lydia Harris,

Assistant Principal of St Cuthbert’s Society

cuthberts.studentsupport@durham.ac.uk

Lydia Harris became Assistant Principal of St Cuthbert’s Society in 2022 and handles all aspects of student support and welfare. The main duties of the Assistant Principal are to provide support assistance and signposting for those students who are experiencing emotional or academic issues which are negatively affecting their personal and professional development. No matter how big or small the issue, Lydia and the Student Support team are here to help you during your time at Cuth’s.

In addition to being the Assistant Principal, Lydia has a PhD in Medieval History and specialises in the history of women’s medicine, reproductive knowledge, gender, and sexuality. Other academic interests since her doctoral work have focused on the menopause in medieval medicine and broadening her approach to gendered history. Previously, Lydia also completed different undergraduate degrees in Classical Studies and another in Theatre, so she is always happy to talk about anything academic.

When she’s not in Cuth’s, Lydia loves to garden, is a fan of puzzles, and spend time with her husband Alex and sons, James and Edward.
