Nanjin stood next to his car

Ahead of the start of this academic year, international exchange student Yukun Tao undertook an epic cross-continental 11,000km journey driving between Nanjing, China, and Durham.

11,000km Road Trip: From China to Durham

“When Harriet Tebbs, our Vice Principal, explained that Yukun Tao had driven all the way from China, I was both surprised and deeply impressed. I knew immediately that I wanted to meet him to hear more about his incredible journey—what an extraordinary way to arrive at Josephine Butler College.”

-Professor Gillian Hampden-Thompson, College Principal

Before starting his exchange year at Durham University, Yukun Tao, a mechanical engineering student from Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU), drove over 11,000km from Nanjing, China, to Durham. After six months of preparations, Yukun's 26-day journey spanned eight countries and included car troubles, border delays, and nights spent booking accommodation on the go.
