Exploring When Courage Calls
In When Courage Calls, Dr Williams delves into Josephine Butler’s remarkable contributions to social justice. Often referred to as the "most distinguished English woman of the nineteenth century," Butler dedicated her life to advocating for the rights of marginalized women and challenging oppressive systems. Among her many achievements, she led campaigns against the Contagious Diseases Acts, which she viewed as unjust and degrading to women. Her work on behalf of destitute women and her persistent fight against human trafficking demonstrated a revolutionary commitment to justice and equality.
Dr Williams’ book highlights Butler’s legacy through a modern lens, connecting her mission to present-day discussions around human trafficking, sexual violence, and women’s rights. Through Butler’s letters and writings, Dr Williams reconstructs the depth of Butler’s Christian faith and the strength it gave her in her battles, providing an inspiring perspective on leadership, courage, and compassion.
Why This Talk is Relevant Today
Dr Williams’ talk promises to not only honour Butler’s legacy but also to spark reflection on current societal issues. As we face ongoing debates about gender, identity, and justice, Butler’s life and beliefs challenge us to reconsider the values that shape our communities. Whether you're interested in Victorian history, social justice, or the evolving landscape of feminism, this talk offers valuable insights into how one woman’s determination can inspire change across generations.
