Your time at University will be exciting and rewarding, but it will also have its challenges. We recognise that many of our students will need support during their time at University. Whether you have a longstanding condition or have recently started to experience difficulties, there is a range of support options.
If you are concerned about your mental or physical health you should always consult your GP. Most Durham students are registered with the University Health Centre at Green Lane.
Visit our Student Support Hub for more information on all of the support services available to you and how to access them.
Your College student support team is here to look after your wellbeing. You can talk to them about any personal, health, or academic concerns that you might have throughout your time at Durham. They can offer you advice and support and, where necessary, liaise with other departments on your behalf. You can set up appointments by a booking form.
Your JCR Welfare team are elected by the student body. They are here to provide you with peer support throughout your time at Butler. They also run campaign weeks to educate and promote conversations about important topics like consent, mental health, and disabilities.
The college student support team along side the JCR and MCR welfare teams deliver a wide range of events and activities to not only provide access to support and signpost to key resources, but also to celebrate key annual events to ensure that our initiatives are relevant to students across the entire college community.
A staple part of the Josephine Butler College community is having a mentor and attending weekly Mentor nights. Mentoring is an integral part of our support network and we feel it’s very important each fresher has the mentor experience.
College mentors can best be described as "interested others" who support and guide a group of students during their time at Durham University. The purpose is to provide a stable and supportive contact for students as an alternative to their hard-pressed academic departments; to get to know students as people in their own right on a social basis; and to signpost them to support networks should they find themselves in difficulties. All first year students are allocated to a College Mentor.
Mentor groups are mixed across the whole college community so this is an opportunity to meet a wider group of peers who you might not have met yet. Our Mentor team is made up of members from the local community, and wider university staff and we also have some Butler graduates and current postgraduate students. They all have a wealth of knowledge to share and take great pride in getting to know their mentees. Mentoring is an informal event, a chance to have a conversation with a new group of people, to share stories, ask questions, and seek advice. All we ask is that you join the session and engage with your group. This is a chance to further cement your place in the Butler community and is an experience not to be missed.
