My Durham Story - Alex Myers-Bennett
By: Alex Myers-Bennett Class of: 2022 College: St Mary's College Subject: Mathematics
What was your experience like studying Maths at Durham?
I found my experience studying maths at university quite different to studying maths at school due to the abstract nature of university maths and the emphasis on why things are true. It was interesting to delve deeper into the fundamentals behind the maths that I’d previously learnt. I enjoyed the broad range of topics you could choose to study and the variety between different modules.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I particularly enjoyed the applied maths modules and learning how maths play such a pivotal role in different fields of study.
My favourite part of my course was the Mathematical Modelling module that I took in second year – I really loved modelling real world problems and the solving these through programming. I also enjoyed the third year project as the longer nature of the project really allowed me to delve deeper into my specific topic and explore a niche area of mathematics.
What are your fondest memories from your time at Durham?
My fondest memory from Durham is attending my college’s midsummer ball in my 3rd year after these events had been the 2 years prior due to Covid. I also loved my time spent competing and training with the Durham University Archery Club.
What have you been up to since you left Durham?
Since leaving Durham, I’ve been working as a Modelling Engineer for DBD International. I’ve been producing logistic models along with providing data analytics to solve problems in the UK and US nuclear industries. It’s been amazing to directly apply the skills I’ve learnt at Durham.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to keep improve my coding skills and to travel as much as I can!
What would be your top advice for current students and/or prospective students?
My advice to students would be to spend time finding what works best for you, and don’t worry if that’s different to other people!
