Alumnus bequest supports new College boat
Hatfield College launched 'Flower of Scotland', made possible by a generous bequest from late alumnus Kenneth McFarlane.
On Saturday 9 November 2024 Hatfield College and Hatfield College Boat Club launched a new boat into the River Wear.
The acquisition of the handsome ‘Flower of Scotland’ was enabled by a generous posthumous bequest by Hatfield alumnus Kenneth McFarlane (Economics, 1978-81). Hatfield College Boat Club’s first six took the boat into the river for a maiden lap, which was succeeded by a joyous rendition of the College song ‘If I could plant a tiny seed of love’.
Mr McFarlane's family and friends were present for the launch of the boat as we celebrated his time at College along with the College Boat Club. The formal launch was followed by lunch, hosted in the Birley Room.
The occasion was well-attended with Hatfield College Officers, Team Durham officials, members of the Boat Club, and current and former Hatfielders in attendance.
