This talk provides an overview of Dr. Thomas's interdisciplinary work on contemporary screen media, encompassing both his research and his experiences of classroom teaching. It will draw on a range of colorful examples, placing a particular emphasis on topics such as the relationship between literature and television, representations of political violence, and the military industrial contexts of the Star Wars franchise.
Dr. Sam Thomas is an Associate Professor of American Studies in the Department of English. He holds a doctorate from the University of Sussex and has worked for Durham since 2007. He is a specialist in contemporary US literature and culture and is best known for his career-spanning work on the novelist Thomas Pynchon.
