Dr Anthony J Palmer

Funding postgraduate research in Chemistry

Dr Anthony (Tony) J Palmer (St Cuthbert’s Society) graduated from Durham University with both a BSc (1964) and a PhD (1967) in Chemistry, before going on to have an interesting scientific career, working on isotopes for X-rays. After graduating, he continued to visit the Chemistry Department, where his thesis is currently on display.

As a Chemistry alumnus, Tony wanted to support postgraduate research within this field.  Through his thoughtful gift we were able to create an annual scholarship in his name, the Dr Anthony J Palmer Scholarship for a Masters by Research in Chemistry.  This funds one student annually to undertake a Masters by Research project within the areas of Bioactive Chemistry, Sustainable Chemistry , or Materials Chemistry.

"The Anthony J Palmer scholarship has been absolutely invaluable in allowing me to continue my desire to learn and delve into the world of chemistry.  I'm confident that my resilience, critical thinking, communicative and collaborative competencies will all be significantly developed across the coming year, and I entirely attribute that to the Palmer scholarship.

I'm hoping that my research can provide a route into more sustainable, green, chemistry in industry, and hopefully play a part in creating a safer future for the generations to come.

I want to express my utmost gratitude for the Anthony J Palmer scholarship. It has enabled me to continue my learning around the subject I love, and for that I am forever grateful."
