Professor Martin Evans, Executive Dean (Social Sciences and Health)
Responsibilities
The Executive Dean is responsible for the strategic development and financial performance of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health. A key academic leader, supporting and enhancing research and teaching performance within the Faculty and an important ambassadorial role for the Faculty and the University.
Professional background and expertise
Martin was appointed in November 2024 from the University of Manchester where he was Professor of Geomorphology and Vice Dean and Head of the School of Environment, Education and Development.
He began his career as a Senior Research Assistant at Durham University and brings over 25 years' experience in Higher Education and a track record in delivering on long term strategy and growth across diverse departments in the social sciences.
Martin is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a fellow of the British Society for Geomorphology.
His research focuses on peatland and restoration, including impacts on flooding, pollution and carbon cycling, working in partnership with policymakers, practitioners and colleagues across the sciences and social sciences.
Education and qualifications
Martin holds an MA from Oxford University and an MSc and PhD from the University of British Columbia.
