Ordinance 5 Faculties
This Ordinance was adopted by the Council on 16 May 2023
1. General
a) This Ordinance supports Statute 14 and should be read in conjunction with it.
b) Terms defined in Statutes will have the same meaning in these Ordinances.
c) Terms defined in Ordinance 13 shall apply to all Ordinances.
2. Definition and Role
a) There shall be the following Faculties:
- The Faculty of Arts and Humanities;
- The Faculty of Business;
- The Faculty of Science;
- The Faculty of Social Sciences; and
- Such other Faculties as shall be established from time to time.
b) The role of a Faculty shall be to oversee and support academic study, qualifications and research in designated areas of academic activity.
c) Each Faculty shall have such powers as are delegated to them by the Council upon the recommendation of the Senate.
3. Head of Faculty
Each Faculty shall be led by an Executive Faculty Dean who shall be the head of their Faculty and who shall be appointed and removed from office in accordance with Ordinance 2 (Officers).
4. Faculty Board
a) Each Faculty shall have a faculty board whose role is to offer guidance and advice to the Executive Faculty Dean on matters relating to academic developments and policy relevant to the Faculty and on such other matters as the Executive Faculty Dean may determine. This may include:
- annual/strategic plans;
- student intake targets;
- research;
- learning and teaching;
- allocation of resources; and
- planning and strategic policy issues.
b) Faculty Boards shall provide brief strategic reports to Senate as required, informed by issues brought from Boards of Studies and elsewhere within the Faculty.
c) The non-confidential minutes of Faculty Boards shall be made available on request to all staff.
d) The membership of each Faculty Board shall be:
- The Executive Faculty Dean;
- The Deputy Executive Deans;
- The Heads of Departments (Chairs of Boards of Studies) in the Faculty;
- The Director of the Combined Programme in the Faculty, if appropriate; and
- such additional members as the Head of Faculty shall determine.
e) Meeting papers, with an invitation to attend meetings for specific relevant agenda items as appropriate, will be made available to the Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors for Education and Research.
