Abstract

This presentation will cover some of the most important accomplishments, approaches, and challenges of real options theory (ROT) in the strategic management field.  ROT addresses some of the most important tensions that executives encounter in corporate investment decisions, including the need to compete versus cooperate, commit vs. be flexible, etc.  Uncertainty is central to strategic investment decisions and alternative theories of resource allocation and firm boundaries, so ROT is at once a rival theory as well as one that can be unifying and serve as a pillar for strategic management.  After taking stock of the development of ROT in strategic management, opportunities for interdisciplinary research will be highlighted.
