Family activities in the Great Hall of Durham Castle

Two tours will run on the day, at 2.15pm and 3.15pm.

Take a tour around one Durham's most significant historic buildings with your family. Our friendly tour guides will take you through the gatehouse and into heart of the historic building, where you will experience history and tales from 1000 years of living history.

Enjoy fun stories and activities throughout, a special quiz, and crafts and dressing up in our beautiful Great Hall at the end of your tour!

Built on the orders of William the Conqueror in the 1070s, Durham Castle began life as a motte-and-bailey castle. It soon became a palace to showcase the wealth of the Prince-Bishops whose semi-regal powers made them one of the most powerful political and military men in the country.

This tour is recommended for children aged 5-11 and their families.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Please check in to our reception at 7 Owengate, DH1 3HB (building in the cobbled street leading up to Palace Green, on the left hand side as you go up) prior to the tour start time.

Due to the residential nature of the building entrance is by guided tour only. Tours last approx. 45-50 minutes.

The historic nature and layout of the Castle means that the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users. The tour route involves many steps and staircases, some of which are uneven.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Please contact by telephone on +44 (0)191 334 2932 or email castle.tours@durham.ac.uk for any more information about this event.
