Experience history and tales from 1000 years of living history. Sitting at the heart of Durham's UNESCO World Heritage Site and built in the Norman period as an imposing fortress, Durham Castle’s story is entwined with that of the Prince-Bishops of Durham, whose semi-regal status made them some of the most powerful and wealthy men in the country. Since the 19th century the Castle has been home to the students of University College, part of Durham University.

Our friendly guides and volunteers will be around Durham Castle to answer your questions and share some of the stories and hidden history of the Castle.

A great visit for all the family to enjoy. Activities for children, games and dressing up to be provided in the Great Hall.

About your visit:

  • Our opening times will be 11am to 3pm, with last entry at 2.15pm
  • Admission is free.
  • All children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • The historic nature and layout of the Castle means that the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users. The tour route involves many steps and staircases, some of which are uneven. Any visitors with accessibility needs please contact 0191 334 2932.
