Report on work at The Bents in South Shields, for the Town Improvement and Sanitary Committee, 1898 (Archives and Special Collections ref SMG/C/99/1)

Church Commissioners' files reveal the negotiations behind many of the developments within South Shields during the first half of the last century.

Developments on the beaches and Marine Parks, filling in of the Mill Dam Gut, the building of new housing and demolition of unfit homes, agreements with mining companies, churches and the Borough Council, all feature within the files.

Throughout, the lives and livelihoods of local residents can be witnessed in the reports and correspondence.
