Postgraduate Study

We have a large and active body of postgraduate members across three departments.

Some of the topics PhD students currently attached to the Centre are working on include water and religious life in the Roman Near East, Bronze Age tombs in the Oman Peninsula, Greek civic foundation myths in Syria, and settlement and land use on the Sassanian frontier. At MA Level, CAMNE staff members across the three host departments are involved in teaching a range of interdisciplinary programmes which attract the best students from around the world:

  • The MA in Greece, Rome and the Near East offered by the Department of Classics offers specialised training for students going on to higher research in cross-cultural interactions between the Classical World and the Near East.
  • In the Archaeology Department, the MA in Archaeology offers a specialised strand on Egypt, India and the Near East, while the MA in International Cultural Heritage Management gives students the chance to examine the cultural resonance and practical management of key sites in the region in today’s changing and often turbulent political and cultural contexts.
  • In Theology, the MA programmes in Biblical Studies, Religion and Society and Theology and Religion all allow for specialisation on the Near Eastern side via modules in Aramaic, Hebrew and Middle Egyptian.
