Accommodation and Catering

Grey College is a fully catered College offering accommodation to our diverse community. We currently have around 320 first-year undergraduate rooms in College. Accommodation is guaranteed to all first-year undergraduate students.

The remaining rooms are inhabited by second, third and fourth-year undergraduates and taught and research postgraduates. All study bedrooms are furnished with a single or 3/4 bed, under-bed storage, a wardrobe, desk, shelves and a basin, with Wi-Fi, and there are laundry facilities provided, both washing machines and dryers on a pay-as-you-go basis. Communal areas are cleaned by the College team on a regular basis but students are responsible for keeping their rooms and communal areas tidy.

All new students are expected to reside in College accommodation during their first year of study and therefore do not need to apply to live in College. Our College contacts all new students in August, shortly after the A level results, with all necessary information. If for exceptional reasons, you wish to live out of College, you should talk to us about this by contacting grey.admissions@durham.ac.uk.

New undergraduate students are guaranteed accommodation in their first year and do not need to do anything about accommodation before the A-Level results are published. Students who confirm their place will be sent the appropriate accommodation forms to complete and then to an online licence agreement which must be signed prior to your arrival to secure your accommodation.

The majority of first-year undergraduates will be allocated to a standard room with shared bathroom facilities along the corridor. Shared bathrooms each have several individual private showers, with changing area, and WCs. Our College does have a number of en-suite rooms.

Grey College currently has 19 shared bedrooms. Those students who are allocated a shared bedroom (by random ballot for the first term, and then amongst the corridor for later terms) will only be required to share for one term unless they choose otherwise, and then have the opportunity to move to a single room. This is overseen by our Assistant Master and JCR President.

We typically offer both standard and short lets accommodation. Students in standard lets can therefore remain in their rooms over the Christmas and Easter vacations (although there is no catering during the vacations), whilst those on short lets must vacate their rooms in the Easter vacation as Grey College trades at this time.
